We don’t just love active and retired military for their courage and dedication, we also love how Army Officer and feature blogger, Julianna, from Blush and Camo balances her passion for service and fashion, and owns her style when she’s not in uniform. Read on for extra fashion tips and see how Julianna pairs service and style together day in and day out.
You came up with the idea for your blog Blush & Camo during your deployment in Afghanistan. What inspired you to start writing?
For as long as I can remember I have been completely in love with fashion and the ability to express yourself creatively through clothes. In 2013, I began to follow a fashion blogger on Instagram not long after I decided to to start a blog as a way to give all my tips on fashion to my friends and women that were looking to elevate their style.
Did your time in Afghanistan make you think differently about fashion?
During my deployment I was in the same uniform for months and because of this it did make me think differently about fashion! When I returned home I added ultra feminine dresses and unique pieces to my closet that were the furthest thing from resembling a uniform.
Is it tough to be a fashionista who’s required to wear a uniform to work?
Yes and no. The plus side is I don’t have to spend any of my money on work clothes so all my fashion money goes towards items I want to splurge on or items I truly want to hang in my closet!
You’ve written that, “Fashion is what you buy, but style is what you do with it.” How does that motto come to life for you?
To me, style is all about how you mix and match patterns, textures and colors to create a look that’s entirely your own. I love how this patterned floral top in today’s post has the ability to be dressed up or down with a variety of looks!
Here’s an obvious one — camo is on-trend this season. How do you make it your own?
I may be a little biased, but I consider camo to be a neutral! Typically, this pattern is mixed with neutral hues and for that reason can be styled unlimited ways.
How do you style yourself when your time’s not on your side?
I like to stick with the basics I know look good and also make me feel confident. This season I love pairing high waisted ripped jeans with a basic white v-neck, flats, and a chunky cardigan. I also love the athleisure trend such as jogger pants and sneakers if I want to be more comfortable.
Thank you for inspiring us and for your service to our country! What thoughts would you like to leave us with this Veterans Day?
Happy Veterans Day to those past and present who have served our country and a huge thank you to all the families who sacrifice on a daily basis to support all the soldiers! I feel extremely honored to serve in the United States Army and think it’s a privilege each day I put on my uniform.
